How Poor Posture Relates to Back Pain

Poor posture is a significant contributor to low back pain, a common issue treated in physical therapy. When individuals maintain poor postural habits, such as excessive curvature of the spine, it places undue stress on the musculoskeletal system, particularly the lower back. This strain can lead to muscle imbalances, weakened core muscles, and altered spinal alignment, all of which can increase the risk of developing or exacerbating low back pain. Over time these postural deviations can cause increased pressure on the intervertebral discs and joints, leading to chronic pain and discomfort.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in correcting these postural issues by promoting proper alignment, strengthening core muscles and teaching patients how to maintain healthy posture throughout daily activities, ultimately reducing the incidence and severity of low back pain.
