Physical Therapy Services

The control you want. The care you deserve.

  • Concierge Therapy

    Take Control of Your Recovery.

Concierge physical therapy gives you the ability to take control of your recovery. Your therapist is no longer restricted by your insurance, so you will get the exact treatment you need to effectively rehabilitate your injury.

Your treatment is focused on you. Each session is one-on-one with your physical therapist. By not seeing multiple patients at once and therefore not relying on rehabilitation aides, your therapist at Smith Physical Therapy can maximize the effectiveness of each treatment session. This means that you are dedicating less time to your recovery overall. Our concierge model also results in more convenient scheduling, as the majority of our patients only need to be seen once or twice per week.

The therapists at Smith Physical Therapy know the difference that advanced techniques can have on your recovery. Our therapists have obtained certifications beyond standard course work which allow us to boast employing Certified Manual Physical Therapists, Pose Certified Running Specialists, Pose Certified Sports Technique Specialists, Functional Movement Screen Specialists, Gary Gray 3DMAPS Specialists, Certified Graston Technique Specialists, ACL Injury Prevention & Return to Sport Specialists, and Y-Balance Test Specialists. The skill of our therapists means that your treatment is tailored exactly to what is best for your particular injury and the goals you have for your recovery.

If you’re unsure if you’re in need of physical therapy or any of our other services, please call to schedule a COMPLIMENTARY INJURY SCREEN to discuss your concerns and goals with a physical therapist.

  • Injury Prevention

Don't Manage Your Pain. Prevent It.

Proper form is important for your performance in any sport and in daily activities in general. Having the knowledge to properly and most effectively move your body will not only help you perform at your best but also help you to avoid injury.

With our Certified Sports Technique & Functional Movement Screen Specialists, you will benefit from:
    • Your specialist’s advanced knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, and proper biomechanics
    • Effective screening of body mechanics, strength, flexibility, and balance
    • Innovative use of video analysis and advanced computer software to assess your personal movement patterns
    • Education on proper biomechanics, specifically of your patterns versus those ideal to get back to optimal performance with a decreased risk of injury
    • Individualized drills and exercises (including at-home exercises) to strengthen your deficits in order to ensure your continued health and the ability to progress toward your goals
  • Return to Play

Are You Ready To Go Back?

Have you suffered a concussion? Or are you someone who:
    • Has been discharged from traditional physical therapy by your insurance company?
    • Was told by your therapist that your return “will just take time?”
    • Knows that you’ve made progress but think there’s more you should be doing?
    • Just doesn’t feel fast enough, strong enough, confident enough—just not ready?

Smith Physical Therapy + Running Academy had developed several areas of continuing care for those patients who do not feel confident in their ability to return to normal function following their discharge from traditional physical therapy.

Return to Play Testing + Training allows the therapist to assess and help improve:
    • Biomechanical form and technique
    • Stability, balance, + proprioception
    • Joint mobility
    • Strength
    • Agility

This testing provides the therapist with a clear indication of the deficits and weaknesses that put you at risk of re-injury or prevent you from returning to normal activities for fear of re-injury.

Return to Play Testing + Training can also be used to ensure you are ready to return from a concussion. Following a closely monitored 5-step program, you will progress from light aerobic exercises back to full practice and training for your sport under our supervision. You will only be allowed to progress through the Return To Play levels if you remain symptom-free at each stage. This will ensure that you will be able to obtain your physician’s clearance to return to your sport without any restrictions.

  • Health + Wellness

Knowledge is Power. Pain is Not.

Why wait until an injury takes you away from your activities to educate yourself on what your body needs?
Our Health + Wellness services help keep you injury free and active in your sport.

    HEALTHY TISSUE MAINTENANCE
Recover faster after a workout or race with a healthy tissue maintenance session. During this 30-minute session, Graston Technique® tools will be used to restore your muscles, tendons, and ligaments to help you move better and feel less soreness. This instrument-assisted soft tissue treatment helps maintain optimal range of motion, address fascial restrictions, and assess for any potential problems.

    ANNUAL MUSCULOSKELETAL ANALYSIS
If you are a triathlete, endurance athlete, or participate in any type of competitive sport, an annual musculoskeletal exam offers you a status update of your body to prevent injuries. Your joints and movement are analyzed through functional testing, including SFMA, Gary Gray's 3D MAPS, and FMS. After this 30-minute assessment, you will receive a problem list that highlights potential dysfunctions so you know where to target your strengthening and flexibility training. This will help you minimize your injuries and improve your performance.

  • Headaches

    Headaches Don't Have to Happen.

It has been estimated that up to 78% of all adults in the United States will experience a headache at some point in their lives. Physical therapy has been proven to be an effective intervention for three of the most popular types of headaches:
    • Tension
    • Cervicogenic
    • Migraine

While the cause of each type of these headaches are different, these chronic types of head pain all share a common feature--neck dysfunction.Problems in the neck will refer pain up into the head, and can worsen the pain through simple everyday movements, awkward and sustained postures, decreased mobility of the neck, and overall joint and muscle stiffness in the neck and upper back.

You will work one-on-one with your physical therapist to address the factors impacting your neck and head pain including:
    • Posture
    • Body Mechanics
    • Joint Mobility
    • Strength
    • Flexibility
    • Ergonomics
    • Education
  • Concussions

You Don't Need To Sit In A Dark Room.

    WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

A concussion is a type of Traumatic Brain Injury that occurs when the brain is jolted back and forth as a result of an impact to the head or a jarring motion to the body that causes the head to quickly move back and forth or side to side.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION?

Symptoms of a concussion may be immediate, or take hours, even days, to develop. A person does NOT have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Please seek medical attention if you think that you or someone you know has suffered a concussion. The most common symptoms include:

    • Feeling and appearing dazed
    • Inability to recall events immediately before and after the injury occurred
    • Confusion
    • Clumsiness
    • Slow responses to questions
    • Mood and personality changes (feeling abnormally sad or angry)
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Headache
    • Balance problems
    • Difficulty with memory

    HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY HELP?

When symptoms of a concussion linger for more than 2 weeks, physical therapy with a therapist specially trained in concussion management is an effective treatment option. Your physical therapist will be able to work with you to help you reduce and get rid of head pain, neck pain, dizziness, blurred vision, and balance and coordination problems.

    ADDITIONAL WAYS WE CAN HELP:

    Return to Play
A supervised, 5-step gradual progression from easy to full return to sport to help determine when an athlete is ready to get back in the game.

    Baseline and Post-Injury Testing
We offer baseline and post-injury testing for children ages 5 and older. Our program for individuals ages 12 and over is more comprehensive than most, offering baseline balance testing as well as cognitive testing.

    Concussion Management For Your Team
We will partner with your athletic team to provide comprehensive, customized concussion management services for you and your athletes, including baseline testing of all appropriate athletes, training and education for your coaches and parents, and assistance in managing your athletes’ concussion, should they occur.

  • Balance/Dizziness

    Bring Life Back Into Focus

    BALANCE
You have three systems in your body that work together to help you keep and maintain your balance: vision, vestibular (inner ear), and somatosensory (input from the receptors in your muscles and joints). When any one of these systems are not working properly because of injury or another disease process, you may experience difficulty with your balance. Our physical therapists will work with you to help determine the factors contributing to your balance impairment and customize education, exercises and treatment to help you get back on your feet!

      DIZZINESS
Dizziness can be described in many different ways – spinning, vertigo, rocking, imbalanced, swaying, even lightheaded. There are even more possible causes for dizziness. From vestibular disorders to dizziness being produced by a problem in the upper part of your neck, your physical therapist trained in vestibular disorders will be able to help determine the cause of your symptoms and implement appropriate treatment. Your physical therapist will assess:
      • Oculomotor (eye) function screening
      • Vestibular testing(both with and without Frenzel lenses)
      • Balance and coordination assessment
      • Strength evaluation
      • Functional mobility examination
      • Gait analysis

Once the cause of your dizziness is determined and physical therapy is indicated, your treatment may include: canalith repositioning techniques, vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) training, oculomotor function exercises, balance and coordination exercises, and manual therapy interventions.
